Report: Japan Could Go Nuclear If Koreas Reunify

A U.S. congressional report says Japan could seek to possess nuclear weapons should the two Koreas unify.

According to the report issued by the Congressional Research Service, a reunification on the Korean Peninsula could further induce Japan to reconsider its nuclear stance.

It was suggested that if the two Koreas unify while North Korea is still in possession of nuclear weapons, and the new state opts to keep a nuclear arsenal, Japan may reconsider its nonnuclear stance.

The report quoted some Japanese analysts as describing a nuclear-armed, unified Korea as "more of a threat than a nuclear-armed North Korea."
