'90% of Danger Zone is Japan's EEZ'

A Japanese daily says 90 percent of the area in the East Sea designated by North Korea as a danger zone ahead of its planned rocket launch is in Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

The Yomiuri Shimbun made the assessment Tuesday as it quoted an expert on international maritime laws.

The paper said if the zone designated by the North as a danger zone overlaps with Japan’s fishing grounds or routes of Japanese ships, the launch would be a violation of Japan’s rights.

The report said discontent on the issue is spreading fast within the Japanese government as there has never been a case where a country designates part of another country’s EEZ as a danger zone.

The North designated the area near the Akita Prefecture in the East Sea as a danger zone where the first-stage booster of its rocket would fall next month.
