The nuclear envoys of South Korea, the United States, and Japan are in Washington for an emergency meeting to discuss North Korea’s imminent rocket launch.
The three officials have agreed to raise issue at the U.N. Security Council if the North proceeds with the launch, saying a launch of either a satellite or a missile would be an obvious violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution.
Korea’s Wi Sung-lak said the U.N. is expected to enforce sanctions against North Korea following a launch, though Wi would not speculate on exactly what the U.N. will do.
He took caution in commenting on plans by Japan to intercept the North's launch, explaining that the plan will be implemented only if the launched object falls within Japan's seas or waters.
North Korea has publicly announced that it plans to launch an experimental communications satellite between April fourth and eighth. The U.S., South Korea and Japan believe it could be a cover for a long-range missile test.
