'UN Sanctions Committee Could Meet if NK Rocket Launched'

The United States says the U.N. Security Council and the Council’s Sanctions Committee could meet in the event of a North Korean rocket launch.

State Department deputy spokesman Gordon Duguid told reporters Tuesday that lawyers and the department itself are looking into ways to counter the North’s planned rocket launch, saying that negotiations and not belligerent statements and actions are the best way for the North to secure international acceptance and security.

Asked if Washington is considering pursuing action outside of Security Council sanctions, Duguid said that nothing has been ruled out.

The U.N. Security Council Sanctions Committee was established in 2006 shortly after North Korea conducted its first missile test.
