WHO: No Plans to Raise Pandemic Alert Level

The World Health Organization (WHO) does not plan to raise its pandemic alert level to the top of its six-tier scale although the number of confirmed cases of the type-A influenza has exceeded one thousand.

The UN health organization’s acting assistant director-general for health, security and environment Keiji Fukuda said there is no evidence of H1N1 spreading in regions outside North America, including Europe and Asia.

The pandemic alert level six will be declared in case of a global outbreak. The WHO will raise its alert level if a case of human-to-human infection occurs in at least two countries in one continent, and then spreads to a country in another continent.

The WHO has reported one-thousand-85 confirmed cases of the type-A influenza in 21 countries, and 26 deaths in Mexico and the U.S.
