Ban Urges NK to Return to Six-Party Talks

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on North Korea to return to the stalled six-party nuclear talks.

Ban spoke at the third Session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2010 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference, saying that he believes the six-party framework is the best way to peacefully achieve verifiable denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

However, North Korea’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador Pak Tok-hun said that the communist nation rejects the U.N. chief's remark during an interview with Reuters. Pak reiterated Pyongyang’s stance that it will not return to the dialogue table.

Pak said North Korea does not see any need or necessity to engage in the talks as long as parties to the six-party talks try to infringe upon Pyongyang’s sovereignty.
