‘No Plans for U.S., NK Bilateral Talks at ARF’

Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun do not plan to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the July ASEAN Regional Forum.

The Washington-based broadcaster quoted a high-ranking U.S. State Department official as saying that the U.S. has not considered what action it will take if North Korea proposes a meeting during the regional security gathering.

A South Korean Foreign Ministry official said talks between the U.S. and North Korea will only take place if there is visible change in their relations before the ARF takes place.

The two countries failed to meet at last year’s ARF. In 2004, then U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and his North Korean counterpart Paek Nam-sun met for 20 minutes.
