'UNDP Officials Discuss Aid Resumption in NK'

Radio Free Asia says four working-level officials of the United Nations Development Program visited North Korea Tuesday and are discussing the resumption of international aid to the communist state.

The U.S.-funded broadcaster quoted a program spokesperson as saying the four officials are in Pyongyang to discuss aid plans and the reopening of a program office in the North Korean capital. Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric added that staff recruitment notices for the new office have also been posted.

He confirmed that the program’s new office in Pyongyang will be renovated and reopened next month, but that resumptions to aid projects will not be decided until talks with North Korea are reviewed.

The U.N. Development Program has led various projects in the North since 1981, including restoration of farm land. But projects were halted following 2007 allegations that North Korea diverted aid funds.
