Civic Group Cancels Planned Visit to NK

An association of ethnic Koreans living in China has cancelled its plans to visit North Korea after the Korean Embassay in Beijing urged restraint in light of recent tension between the two Koreas.

The Korean Organization in China was planning a visit the North in August as part of nongovernmental efforts to contribute to the unification of the two Koreas.

The group’s head Jeong Hyo-gwon has been seeking to visit the North even before taking his post in December last year. The group was negotiating the details of the visit with North Korean officials.

The embassy said it found out about the plans through media reports and asked the group to carefully consider the trip given the current inter-Korean relations.
