The U.N. Security Council has unanimously decided to adopt a new resolution to address North Korea’s Monday test of a nuclear weapon.
The council also issued an official statement on Tuesday denouncing Pyongyang’s test, saying the move is a clear violation of U.N. Resolution 1718.
The U.N.’s new resolution is expected to include stronger sanctions against North Korea, including a ban on imports and exports of all types of weapons and an embargo on ships and airplanes suspected of carrying such weapons.
The new resolution is also expected to include financial sanctions and a message to U.N. member states urging them to freeze overseas assets of individuals and companies involved with the North’s weapons program.
The council’s resolution is expected to be stronger and more binding than previous resolutions on the North, as China and Russia, which have often opposed strong U.N. action against North Korea, are unlikely to raise issue.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he hopes the council will come up with necessary corresponding measures to the North’s nuclear test.
