The United Nations Security Council members have unanimously agreed to adopt a new resolution on North Korea’s second nuclear test after revising an existing resolution.
The council also issued a statement denouncing the North’s latest test, saying the move is a clear violation of U.N. Resolution 1718.
The U.N.’s new resolution is expected to include strong sanctions against Pyongyang, including a ban on imports and exports of all types of weapons, and an embargo on ships and airplanes suspected of carrying such weapons.
The new resolution is also expected to include financial sanctions, such as restrictions on North Korean financial activities and a freezing of the country’s overseas assets.
The council’s resolution is expected to be stronger and more binding than previous resolutions on the North, as China and Russia -- longtime dissenters of punishments on Pyongyang --- are unlikely to raise issue.
