Nonprofit Urges Long-term Engagement Policy on NK

A nonprofit anti-proliferation foundation is urging for the U.S. to develop long-term engagement policies for North Korea.

In an article on the online edition of CNN, program director of the Ploughshares Fund, Paul Carroll, said harsh measures against Pyongyang would not better the situation. He also said there is little chance China, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, would approve any actions that could lead to the North’s collapse.

Accordingly, Carroll called for the establishment of a consistent long-term engagement policy, proposing college exchange programs or military talks on excavating remains of missing U.S. soldiers from the Korean War. He says these types of moves could serve as a trust-building foundation for the two nations to have a better understanding of one another.
