‘New UN Resolution on NK May Take Time’

A number of United Nations diplomats expect it will take time for the U.N. Security Council to draft a new resolution that condemns North Korea for its detonation of a nuclear device on Monday.

A high-ranking U.N. official said it is unlikely a decision will come within the week, explaining there is no progress in detailed talks due to China’s undecided stance.

Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., said after the second meeting on Wednesday that discussions are in the early stages and that careful consideration must be taken before a resolution is drafted.

The U.N. Security Council had quickly issued a statement denouncing the North’s nuclear test, raising speculation that a new resolution would be adopted within the week.
