A U.S. diplomatic expert says North Korea has miscalculated the global anger its provocation would raise with its latest nuclear test.
In a contribution piece to the International Herald Tribune on Thursday, Brian Klein from the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) think tank said that whatever the ultimate cause, North Korea’s belligerency is having the exact opposite of any intended effects.
Klein said that the North’s nuclear test is unlikely to lead to separate, direct negotiations with the U.S. and that parties to the six-way nuclear talks are likely to resort to more punitive measures against the North. He suspected that the international reaction will be swift and unforgiving.
Klein also said that Pyongyang is not demonstrating significant progress in its nuclear capabilities despite its repeated missile and nuclear tests, adding that doubts remain on the range of the country’s rockets.
