Yomiuri: Draft Resolution Permits NK Boat Searches

A Japanese daily says the United States and Japan have circulated a draft of a U.N. Security Council resolution against North Korea to South Korea, China, Britain, France and Russia.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the draft resolution, sought in response to the North’s nuclear test on Monday, includes making cargo inspections of North Korean vessels mandatory, and would permit the use of force when doing so.

The report said that although Beijing is unlikely to approve the draft --- given its history of reluctance back to strong sanctions on the North --- Washington will continue to push for approval.

The draft also includes a measure that prohibits banking transactions with North Korean financial institutions, including the Foreign Trade Bank and Korea Daesong Bank.
