US Drawing up Strategy on NK Nuke Issue

The United States says it is working with its allies to come up with a comprehensive and coordinated strategy to deal with North Korea’s recent provocative behavior, which includes nuclear and missile tests.

State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood told reporters Tuesday that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has recently discussed North Korean issues with her Chinese and Russian counterparts over the phone and agreed on the need to take very strong measures against Pyongyang.

Wood then reaffirmed that North Korea will be held responsible for its recent belligerent rhetoric and provocative behavior.

The spokesman added that the U.S. is considering unilateral options with regard to the North, making clear that the U.S. plans to seek its own sanctions against Pyongyang aside from sanctions that are expected to be imposed by the United Nations under a new resolution.

Wood emphasized that the U.S. would be willing to discuss the situation with Pyongyang within the Six-Party Framework and that the North must live up to its international obligations.
