Japanese media say the U.S. is shifting its policy on North Korea from dialogue to pressure.

The Asahi Shimbun said Tuesday the fact that a U.S. delegation visiting Japan was made up of diplomatic, military and financial officials suggests Washington intends to apply pressure on the North.

In particular, the paper said the participation of Stuart Levy, the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, demonstrates that the U.S. is considering financial sanctions against the North.

The Yomiuri Shimbun also said Washington is apparently taking a different course of action in regards to dealing with the North.

According to the Asahi Shimbun, the head of the U.S. delegation, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, said during a meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone on Monday that the U.S. will continue to negotiate with the North, but that the negotiations will come in a new form.
