US Vigils Planned for Detained Journalists in NK

A nonprofit organization in the U.S. will hold candlelight vigils across the United States for two U.S. journalists detained by North Korea.

Defense Forum Foundation President Suzanne Scholte announced Wednesday that the organization will hold a candlelight vigil in Washington on Thursday morning, Korean time, when the North is scheduled to try the two American journalists.

Scholte said the vigil is aimed at urging Washington and Pyongyang to deal with the release of the journalists as a humanitarian issue. She added that similar rallies will be held in New York and Los Angeles on Thursday.

Laura Ling and Euna Kim, of San Francisco-based Current TV, were taken into custody by the North along its border with China on March 17th while they were shooting a documentary. Pyongyang says the two will be tried for unspecified “hostile acts.”
