The United Nations Security Council is not likely to reach a final agreement on new sanctions against North Korea within the week.
Diplomatic sources said ambassadors from the United States, China, Russia, Britain and France and envoys from South Korea and Japan did not hold a meeting on Saturday and it is unclear whether they will hold one on Sunday.
On Thursday, Washington and its allies and Beijing and Moscow were able to narrow their differences on contentious issues including freezing Pyongyang’s overseas assets and financial accounts, expanding the trade ban on weapons and conducting tougher inspections on North Korean cargoes.
But the source said reaching a final agreement could take some time, as some provisions will require difficult decisions from concerned governments.
Once the key council members reach agreement on the draft resolution, it will be voted on by the 15-nation Security Council.
