China, Japan Discuss NK Nuke Issue

The foreign ministers of Japan and China have discussed North Korea’s recent nuclear test and preparations to launch another long-range missile.

During their meeting in Tokyo on Sunday, Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone asked Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi for Beijing’s cooperation in the swift adoption of a new U.N. resolution sanctioning North Korea.

Nakasone also called on China to help convince North Korea to promptly return to the stalled six-way nuclear talks.

In response, Yang reportedly said his country is hoping the U.N. Security Council will adopt an appropriate and balanced resolution on the North.

Japan’s Kyodo News said such a stance by China suggests that it will not accept hard-line sanctions by the U.N. against Pyongyang.
