US Firm Expands Beef Recall on E. Coli Fears

The U.S. government says a Colorado company has voluntarily extended its recall of beef products suspected of being contaminated with a potentially deadly strain of E. coli bacteria.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says JBS Swift Beef Company recalled 19 tons of beef last week and an additional 172 tons today.

The recalled products, produced on April 21st, have been distributed to 13 U.S. states, including California and Florida. They were also exported overseas, but the department didn't say to which areas.

The expanded recall was spurred by a multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 that has sickened 24 people. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 18 of those illnesses appear to be linked.

The U.S. Agriculture Department calls the recall a preventive measure.
