UN Head to Visit Myanmar

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will not likely meet with Myanmarese activist Aung San Suu Kyi during his visit to the Southeast Asian country.

Ban is scheduled to visit Myanmar for two days starting Friday.

A Myanmarese government official said that the U.N head will meet with General Than Shwe, the leader of the nation's military junta, in the capital of Nephthys on the first day of his visit.

Some observers have expressed concerns that Ban's visit could cause diplomatic problems, since Suu Kyi's trial will be held during his stay.

In response, the U.N.chief said that he will urge the Myanmarese junta to hold a democratic election in 2010 during his visit.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the leader of Myanmar's opposition party, the National League for Democracy, has been in detention without trial for more than 13 of the past 19 years.
