NK Fires Barrage of Missiles off East Coast

North Korea test-launched seven missiles off its eastern coast Saturday.

The missiles were launched beginning around eight a.m. from the North’s Gitdaeryreong base in Gangwon Province.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said the missiles are estimated to have a range over 400 kilometers.

A ministry official said on condition of anonymity that they appeared to be Scud missiles, but could be the mid-range Nodong missiles whose range had been shortened.

He said Pyongyang had been preparing to test-fire mid-range missiles in Gitdaeryeong since last month.

Saturday’s launch came two days after the North fired four short-range missiles from its Sinsang-ri base in South Hamgyeong Province.
