S.Korea-Canada Open Skies Pact Takes Effect

An open sky agreement between South Korea and Canada went into effect on Thursday.

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says the aviation pact fully liberalizes air travel for both passengers and cargo between the two countries. The pact also removes limits on service areas and the number of flights allowed.

South Korea is the first Asian country to strike such a deal with Canada, following their signing of the open skies treaty during two-day talks in Vancouver in November last year.

South Korea clinched an open skies travel treaty with the U.S. in 1998, with Japan in 2007 and with Mexico in 2008.

The nation will enjoy unrestricted air travel with China starting next year and will also launch similar negotiations with the European Union in the fourth quarter of this year.
