The U.S. State Department says the U.S. will reward North Korea only if it returns to six-way nuclear talks and takes actions that lead to a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.
Assistant State Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Kurt Campbell recently told reporters in Seoul that the U.S. is willing to offer a comprehensive aid package to North Korea for coming back to negotiations and taking irreversible disarmament steps.
Assistant State Secretary Philip Crowley told reporters that Washington’s offer reflects changes in how the U.S. plans to prompt North Korea to disarm.
Crowley said his country wants to see North Korea come back to the six-party negotiations but will not guarantee rewards merely for doing so.
His statement reiterates that the U.S. will not reward North Korea without denuclearization efforts on behalf of Pyongyang, taking into account the North's history of breaching nuclear agreements.
