North Korean media say former U.S. President Bill Clinton expressed an apology to North Korean leader Kim Jong-il for the conduct of two American journalists released on Wednesday.

In a Wednesday statement on the result of Clinton's visit to North Korea, the North's Korean Central News Agency said Kim pardoned and freed the detainees following Clinton’s apology.

The statement said Clinton thanked Kim for the pardon and courteously conveyed a verbal message from U.S. President Barack Obama expecting improved bilateral ties.

The news agency said that Clinton and Kim agreed to resolve issues through dialogue.
