A Japanese daily says the U.S. and Japanese envoys on the North Korean nuclear issue have agreed that U.N. sanctions on Pyongyang are producing results.
Yomiuri Shimbun says the agreement came during talks between U.S. coordinator on North Korea sanctions Philip Goldberg and Tokyo’s nuclear envoy Akitaka Saiki in Japan.
Goldberg, who visited Southeast Asia before arriving in Japan, reportedly told Saiki that implementation of the sanctions by countries concerned has thus far been satisfactory.
Saiki then explained how the Japanese Diet had to abort a special bill enabling inspections of North Korean cargo due to partisan disagreement.
The daily said the two also discussed exchange project agreements reached between South Korea’s Hyundai Group and North Korea to resume tours to the North’s Geumgang Mountain. They agreed to keep tabs on money flowing in and out of North Korea following the tour’s resumption.
