DPJ Expected to Win Control of House

The opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) is expected to win an overwhelming victory in the Lower House election on Sunday.

Polls show the DPJ could win 300 out of 480 seats.

The polls show the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will likely win only about 100 seats, a massive plunge from its current 300.

Concerns are rising inside the LDP that the expected crushing defeat will result in an unprecedented ruling party split.

Japanese media say the election is expected to put an end to the LDP’s 54-year political monopoly and provide Japan with a fresh start for the first time since the end of World War Two.
