Radio Free Asia says Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo visited North Korea on Monday.

Citing a diplomatic source in Washington, the U.S. broadcaster said the Chinese official visited North Korea to persuade the North to abandon its nuclear ambitions as global sanctions continue on Pyongyang.

The report said the Chinese official may have also discussed the schedule for Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao’s planned visit to North Korea next month as well as the proposed bilateral talks between the North and the United States.

The broadcaster also said that chairman of the North’s Supreme People’s Assembly Choe Thae-bok visited Beijing on Tuesday with an aim of restoring bilateral ties after parliamentary exchanges between the two countries were canceled following North Korea’s second nuclear test in May.
