Hatoyama Elected Japan's New PM

Japan’s longtime opposition leader Yukio Hatoyama has been elected the nation’s new prime minister.

In the special parliamentary session of the Japanese Diet, Hatoyama won 327 of 408 votes in the lower house and took 124 of 237 votes in the upper house.

As Japan’s new leader, Hatoyama will attend the U.N. General Assembly in New York and the Group of 20 summit on the global economic crisis set to take place in Pittsburgh next week.
