Koreans to Head to Indonesia to Teach Hangeul

A minority tribe in Indonesia has enlisted the help of native Korean speakers to assist in teaching the Korean language.

The Hunminjeongeum Research Institute said it will send South Korean teachers to the city of Bau-Bau located in Buton, Southeast Sulawesi, early next year.

The institute made the dispatch decision at the request of an Indonesian teacher who teaches the Korean language and “Hanguel” alphabet to the locals. He is the sole Korean language teacher on Buton Island.

The Indonesian teacher told Yonhap News last week that more than one teacher is needed to teach the Korean language and alphabet to all the local residents.

The dispatched Koreans will teach Hangeul to local elementary, middle and high school teachers.

The Indonesian ethnic minority called “Cia-Cia” designated in August Hangeul as the official alphabet to transcribe its aboriginal language.
