NHK: Hatoyama to Visit S. Korea Next Month

Japan’s NHK says new Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama is likely to visit South Korea early next month.

The leading broadcaster said Saturday that the governments of the two countries are coordinating views to have Hatoyama visit South Korea and hold summit talks with President Lee Myung-bak some time before October 10th when the leaders of South Korea, China and Japan will hold summit talks in Beijing.

The report said the latest preparations are aimed at displaying the new Japanese government’s intent to strengthen diplomacy in the Asian region. The report added that the upcoming trilateral summit will provide an opportunity for the three Asian neighbors to draft security measures on establishing a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

Hatoyama is scheduled to hold summit talks with U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday and also attend the U.N. General Assembly.
