The U.S. Defense Department is reviewing its ballistic missile defense system with North Korea and Iran's missile threats in mind.
Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy told Senate Armed Services Committee members on Thursday that the Pentagon is in the midst of a comprehensive review of the strategic and applicable approaches related to global missile defense systems.
Flournoy said the reviewing process is being conducted based on a variety of principles, including protecting the U.S. and its allies from potential missile threats from North Korea and Iran.
Senate Armed Services Committee members criticized the move, saying it would compromise a three-year-old missile defense plan for Europe. Members also raised issue with intelligence authorities’ ability to analyze data, saying authorities seem to have underestimated the threats posed by the North’s long-range Daepodong missile.
