The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution on nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation.
The council’s 15 member nations adopted the resolution on Thursday shortly after U.S. President Barack Obama opened a special summit on nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament.
The resolution commits member nations to work toward a world without nuclear weapons and calls for increased efforts to prevent their spread, promote disarmament and “reduce the risk of nuclear terrorism.” The resolution also denounces threats made against nuclear nonproliferation efforts and reaffirms its intent to face such threats with existing sanctions.
Though the resolution did not name specific countries, it apparently was issuing a warning to countries with nuclear ambitions such as North Korea and Iran.
Thursday's summit was the fifth of its kind to be held since the Security Council was established in 1946.
Obama became the first American president to chair a meeting of the U.N. Security Council, as the United States currently holds the rotating presidency of the 15-member body this month.
