N.Koreans in Japan Excluded from Suffrage Bill

Members of a pro-Pyongyang association of ethnic Koreans in Japan are expected to be excluded from a Japanese bill that will grant foreign nationals with permanent resident status the right to vote in elections.

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper said Tuesday that the bill, drafted by the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, aims to grant suffrage to foreign nationals with permanent residence status who are from countries with which Japan has diplomatic ties or active relations.

However, members of the “Chongryeon” pro-Pyongyang association are unlikely to be included, as they are North Korean, not South Korean, by nationality.
