French Envoy Discussed Nukes, Rights in NK

A special envoy of French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he discussed nuclear proliferation and human rights concerns with North Korean officials during a visit to Pyongyang.

Lawmaker Jack Lang made a five-day visit to the North last week to discuss the possibility of forging diplomatic ties with the communist state.

In an interview with French media upon his return from the visit, Lang cited North Korean officials as saying that no nuclear fission or ballistic materials were being moved out of the country.

He said he met with the North's parliamentary chief Kim Yong-nam but not with leader Kim Jong-il.

Among the nations included in the European Union, only France and Estonia have yet to establish diplomatic relations with North Korea.
