A Japanese newspaper says North Korea and Iran have, in the past, worked together in an attempt to develop high-performance cruise missiles.

The Sankei Shimbun quoted a source familiar with North Korean affairs as saying that the missiles are capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

According to the Japanese daily, North Korea and Iran purchased KH-55 cruise missiles developed by the Soviet Union from Ukraine in 2001, after which they worked together to try to develop similar missile technology.

The daily said the Ukrainian government, however, reported that the KH-55 cruise missiles it owned were sold only to China and Iran.
