U.S. special representative for North Korea policy Stephen Bosworth held talks with North Korean officials shortly after arriving in Pyongyang on Tuesday.
State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told reporters that Bosworth and his delegation are expected to hold more high-level talks on Wednesday.
Crowley said it is difficult at the current moment to say who Bosworth might meet with, adding, however, that a high-ranking official that can represent Pyongyang’s position with authority is expected to take part.
On the possibility of the North demanding a peace treaty, Crowley said the issue concerns parties other than the U.S. and therefore must be negotiated under a multilateral framework.
Meanwhile, a senior State Department official familiar with Bosworth’s agenda said that although the presidential envoy is scheduled to leave the North on Thursday, his stay could be extended depending on the situation. Bosworth is expected to make a stop in Seoul after wrapping up talks with the North.
