Anti-Korean Sentiment Rare in China

A survey finds that anti-Korean sentiment is relatively rare in China.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences distributed questionnaires during the summer to 32-hundred citizens of the top five cities in China, including Beijing.

Among the respondents, 50 percent positively viewed Korea-China relations while as many as 41 percent gave the relationship an average rating.

Only 16 percent said Koreans and Chinese were mutual in their dislike for one another, and less than six percent said they harbored anti-Korean sentiment.

In addition, 67 percent of those surveyed said they felt more positively toward Korea than to Japan.

Chinese Academy of Social Sciences research fellow Wang Shaoling said the Korean Wave, or “Hallyu,” which works to popularize Korean pop culture, is having a positive impact on the way the Chinese view Koreans.
