No WMDs Aboard Plane Detained in Thailand

Thai news outlets are reporting that there were no weapons of mass destruction among the cargo carried by a Georgian-flagged plane that was detained at a Thai airport on Saturday.

The cargo, weighing in at some 40 tons and valued at 21 billion won, included two North Korean-produced rockets and rocket launch pads, and Russian rocket-propelled bombs.

A Thai government spokesman said that all of the confiscated weapons will be destroyed and that the government will ask the U.N. to pay for the destruction of the weapons.

Thai authorities are seeking to extend the detention of the plane’s crew, believing that it will take more than one month to determine the owner and the final destination of the cargo.

The cargo plane was halted by Thai authorities when it stopped over in Thailand for re-fueling on suspicion of carrying weapons produced in North Korea.
