'NK Must Abide by UN Resolution'

South Korea and Russia have agreed on the need to keep in place sanctions against North Korea as long as Pyongyang fails to abide by U.N. Resolution 1874.

Russia’s top nuclear negotiator Alexei Borodavkin told reporters in Moscow that he and South Korean nuclear envoy Wi Sung-lac discussed the matter during talks on Thursday.

Borodavkin said that both agreed the North’s demands for eased sanctions must not be met until Pyongyang observes the U.N. resolution, which demands that the North return to the six-party denuclearization talks and that it renounce its withdrawal from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

The North reportedly told U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Stephen Bosworth during last week’s visit to the communist state that the U.N. sanctions imposed on Pyongyang were unfair.
