UN Chief Working toward Nuke-Free Peninsula

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is promising to do his best to help create a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

Ban told reporters at U.N. headquarters in New York that efforts should be renewed to peacefully resolve Korean Peninsula affairs through dialogue.

He also promised to do his utmost to help denuclearize the Koreas.

His promise comes after North Korea proposed Monday that talks be held to discuss replacing the Korean War armistice with a peace treaty.

The communist country also hinted that it will return to the six-way nuclear talks if U.N. sanctions on it are lifted.
