S. Korea to Deploy Over 2,000 PKO Troops

Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan said Korea would push to increase the number of troops dispatched to U.N. peacekeeping operations from a cap of one-thousand to two-thousand by revising the relevant law.

Yu said in a New Year meeting at the Korean Council on Foreign Relations on Thursday morning that South Korea would like to increase the number of forces deployed with the U.N. PKO to one-thousand within 2010 and gradually increase the number to a maximum of two-thousand.

It is notable given his comment was in sharp contrast to the law that passed late in 2009 at the National Assembly on U.N. PKO participations, which limited the number of U.N. peacekeeping forces to one-thousand.
