'Sanctions Can be Lifted Only after Progress in Denuclearization'

Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan and his Japanese counterpart Katsuya Okada held talks in Tokyo Saturday and agreed to cooperate for a swift resumption of six-party nuclear talks.

The two ministers pledged diplomatic efforts to quickly resume the talks between the six nations and to assure North Korea's denuclearization.

The two sides also agreed that lifting sanctions on North Korea, as the North requested as a precondition to resuming dialogue, could be reviewed by the U.N. Security Council once there's progress in the denuclearization process.

A foreign ministry official in Seoul says South Korea and Japan will cooperate so the international community upholds a united stance on the nuclear issue. He said the two sides will continue to implement the U.N. resolution and maintain a two-track approach on Pyongyang through dialogue and sanctions.
