Only 6% of Huge Historical Map Collection Uses 'East Sea' Label

Only six percent of the maps included on the Web site of one of the world’s largest private collections of cartographic materials were found to have labeled the waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan as the “East Sea.”

The Korea Maritime Institute said Thursday that after studying some 20-thousand historical maps on the David Rumsey Collection Web site, only six percent used the “East Sea” label.

Meanwhile, 55 percent of the studied maps used the label “Sea of Japan” for waters between Korea and Japan, while 35 percent had no name for the waters.
