Earthquake Hits Border Area between Russia and China

A magnitude six-point-seven earthquake hit an area close to North Korea’s northeastern border with China and Russia at 10:13 a.m. Thursday.

According to U.S. and South Korean authorities, the quake’s epicenter was some 110 kilometers northeast of the North Korean city of Cheongjin.

No casualties or damage have been reported.

The Associated Press reported that although area residents said they did not feel the quake, office towers in Beijing 12-hundred-40 kilometers away from the epicenter swayed for about a minute.

In Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency says the quake occurred when the Pacific Plate, which forms the foundation for Japan and parts of the Pacific, slid under the Eurasian Plate.

A two-magnitude earthquake in Hokkaido and Aomori Prefecture in Japan was detected with no damage reported.
