Report: NK Continues to Print Supernotes

A U.S. government report on international drug transactions says North Korea continues to circulate high-quality counterfeit U.S. currency called “supernotes.”

The U.S. State Department’s International Narcotics Control Strategy Report said that counterfeit 100 dollar notes continue to turn up in various countries, including the United States and South Korea. The report said there are recent reports of supernote seizures in San Francisco, and a very large seizure in Busan.

The report also cited that information obtained by the press, industry and law enforcement agencies continues to shed light on the North’s links to large-scale counterfeit cigarette trafficking in the North Korea Export Processing Zone at Rason.

The report added that Pyongyang has apparently ceased large-scale drug trafficking, as no reports were confirmed in 2009.
