The weekly magazine Economist has criticized the Japanese government for denying suffrage for ethnic Koreans in Japan who pay taxes and come from families who have lived there for decades.

In the report “Koreans in Japan: Taxation without representation,” the magazine says giving suffrage to ethnic Koreans in Japan should not be controversial.

The Economist says legislative momentum to give suffrage to ethnic Koreans has stalled due to the deep-rooted fear among Japanese people of Koreans and Chinese.
