French Lawmaker Predicts Favorable Outcome to Joseon Texts Issue

A French legislator says he expects a favorable outcome within the next few months regarding South Korea’s request that Joseon Dynasty documents looted by the French be returned to Korea.

French National Assembly member Jack Lang made the remarks to Korean reporters in Paris on Thursday, Korean time.

Lang, France’s former minister of culture, said French President Nicolas Sarkozy is hoping to find an agreeable solution regarding the Joseon documents.

Lang said French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner will discuss the matter with the Korean government during a two-day visit to Korea that starts Friday.

Korea has been demanding ancient Korean royal texts the French stole during an 1866 invasion of Ganghwa be returned.

Meanwhile, Lang, who visited North Korea in November 2009 as a special envoy of Sarkozy, said France plans to open a cultural office in North Korea before this summer.
