A total of 25 North Korean escapees have been found to be living in the United States after having been granted refugee status.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics said in a report Thursday that some 74-thousand-600 people had received U.S. recognition as refugees last year, up 24 percent from last year. Among the group, 25 were North Koreans.

A total of 93 North Korean escapees have been granted refugee status by the U.S. since 2006. Nine were granted the status in 2006, 22 in 2007 and 37 in 2008.

People who receive recognition as refugees can work in the United States and can apply for a green card one year after they are granted refugee status.
